AI Restaurant Reviews

Reporting from D Magazine last week alleged that artificial intelligence was used to write several Dallas-area restaurant descriptions in the Michelin Guide. The report cited analysis from AI-detection software and two Carnegie Mellon University researchers. The allegations concerned review wording and style rather than the method Michelin determined restaurant ratings. Michelin denied using AI to write or edit the descriptions, telling USA Today that its inspector notes are developed collaboratively by its inspection team based on firsthand dining experiences.

If food critics use AI tools to help write restaurant descriptions based on human inspectors’ evaluations, how would that affect your trust in the publication?
