According to a public health organization in Australia, wider availability of online restaurant meal delivery is negatively affecting its residents’ health.
LiveLighter, an Australia public health education program, surveyed 2,000 people and found that ordering food delivery resulted in them spending more money and choosing less healthy options than traditional home cooking. In specific, 62 percent of those surveyed chose less healthy options compared to what they would have normally cooked for themselves—which we admit seems rather vague.
“We want Aussies to realize convenience eating comes at a price, not just to their wallets, but more importantly their health,” said Alison McAleese, campaign manager at LiveLighter.
LiveLighter says that 67 percent of Australian adults are currently overweight or obese, increasing the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes and a range of cancers.
