Amid rising gasoline prices, Uber Technologies announced expanded fuel discounts for delivery drivers and couriers on the platform in late March, with some of the offers available through late May.

To help counter sharp price hikes that are broadly impacting fuel costs, Uber introduced mileage-based gas price relief for delivery drivers, paid out weekly, starting March 30, with an initial end date of May 3. According to a March 25 press release, drivers who surpass 125 active delivery miles earn $5 in addition to their existing earnings and tips; drivers who reach 200 such miles earn an additional $10, and drivers who cross the 250-mile threshold for deliveries receive a $15 incentive.

Uber’s weekly gas relief payment incentives for delivery drivers directly match those provided by DoorDash, which are set to conclude slightly earlier, with an initial end date of April 26, as announced in a March 23 press release

Uber publicized an additional 5 percent cash back — on top of existing rates of 2 to 6 percent— at all U.S. gas stations with the Uber Pro Card, which is designed exclusively for drivers and couriers who use the Driver app, regardless of their Uber Pro or Uber Eats Pro tier. Savings at the pump are compounded by 4 percent cash back at Exxon or Mobil pumps and 1 percent cash back at Mastercard Easy Savings stations.

DoorDash implemented a five-fold increase in cash back on qualifying gas purchases, growing that incentive to 10 percent as part of the fuel price relief effort.

Uber’s gas savings press release also highlighted expanded discounts on fuel through Upside — a cash-back app from customers of gas stations, grocery stores and restaurants — and Shell Fuel Reward programs. Through Upside, delivery drivers can earn up to $1 off per gallon, up from the previous maximum of 25 cents per gallon. Maximum savings through the Shell program tripled to 21 cents per gallon. Both promotions apply in the U.S. and run through May 26.

When combining the Uber Pro Card, Upside and Shell Fuel Rewards discounts, Uber calculated savings of up to $1.44 per gallon of gas. With the U.S. Energy Information Administration reporting an average price per gallon of regular gasoline at $3.961, the total maximum savings reported by Uber constitute a 36.36 percent discount.

Regarding electric vehicle charging, Uber Pro Card users with the premium “Diamond” status earn up to 12 percent cash back. That incentive existed before the recent gas price increases.

DoorDash’s fuel relief program limited gas rewards to $700 per month, while Uber capped refueling incentives for both gas and EV charging at $105 monthly — excluding Mastercard Easy Savings.
