Starbucks has tapped AI to automate inventory counting, now rollling out across North American coffeehouses.
With just a quick scan on a handheld tablet, baristas can instantly see what’s in stock. So that items like cold foam, oat milk, or caramel drizzle are always available.
Developed with Nomad Go, the system combines computer vision, 3D spatial intelligence, and augmented reality to make inventory counts fast and accurate. What used to take an hour now takes under 15 minutes. It highlights what’s on hand, flags low-stock items, and will soon be able to automate restock orders.
“We’ve already deployed this innovation in thousands of coffeehouses,” said Deb Hall Lefevre, Starbucks chief technology officer in a statement. “The impact is clear: Inventory is now counted eight times more frequently, giving us real-time visibility and enabling faster, more precise replenishment.”
The system will be live in all company-operated stores by the end of September.
“Behind the scenes, these fast, accurate and frequent data pulses automate portions of our operations to speed up deliveries and minimize stockouts. This modernization sets the stage for smarter supply chain optimization and more frequent inventory replenishment,” Lefevre added.
Despite leaning into tech, the company emphasizes that human connection remains just as important, as seen in its latest push like writing a customer’s name on cups.
In May, it launched Shift Marketplace scheduling tool, followed by a generative powered chatbot , dubbed Green Dot Assist for employees to help with everyday tasks.
These updates come as the company works to bounce back from a sales slump that began in late 2023.
