America’s most populous city is turning to third-party delivery platforms — Instacart, DoorDash and Uber Eats — to help deliver a cleaner community.
New York City is rolling out new trash bin requirements as part of a years-long initiative to reduce rat sightings, among other sanitation goals. Starting this June, low-density residential buildings in the city must use the new NYC trash bins, which are compatible with collection trucks and utilize secure, latching lids.
In an early March 4 press release announcing the expanded availability of the new bins, the NYC Department of Sanitation reported that the NYC Bins are now available at 22 Home Depot stores throughout the city for in-store pickup or via delivery through Instacart, DoorDash and Uber Eats.
While the official NYC bin is only required for trash, other NYC bins — paper and cardboard recycling; metal, glass and plastic recycling; and compost — are all available through Home Depot through the aforementioned 3PD platforms.
The trash bin delivery represents another step in DoorDash and Uber Eats’ expansion of delivery beyond food. According to data from Gridwise’s 2026 Annual Gig Mobility Report, Uber Eats’ delivery mix grew from 11 to 12 percent from 2024 to last year; DoorDash similarly saw an increase from 8 percent to 10 percent in 2025 compared to the prior year.
