DoorDash and Wing have partnered to offer drone delivery in the U.S. The service will be available in Christiansburg, VA and will allow patrons to order selected menu items from Wendy’s for drone delivery.
This offering follows the duo’s pilot drone delivery program, which was launched in 2022 in Australia. That program has expanded to three locations in Queensland and now has more than 60 participating merchants.
Harrison Shih, Senior Director of DoorDash Labs, said they are excited to expand their partnership with Wing in the United States. “At DoorDash, we are committed to advancing last-mile logistics by building a multi-modal delivery platform that serves all sides of our marketplace. We’re optimistic about the value drone delivery will bring to our platform as we work to offer more efficient, sustainable, and convenient delivery options for consumers,” Shih said.
This new service provides a quick delivery mode for short-distance orders of small capacity. Eligible customers in Christiansburg, VA, can place an order via the DoorDash app from the Wendy’s restaurant at 2355 N. Franklin Street. Patrons can select “drone delivery” when placing their order and it will be delivered in about 30 minutes or less via a Wing drone.
DoorDash Labs, which focuses on robotics and automation, is responsible for this recent partnership with Wing. Wing’s drone delivery is highly automated and has been designed to deliver goods from businesses to homes in a short time frame.
Cosimo Leipold, Head of Partnerships at Wing, said that this program launch in the U.S. has resulted from the success that was seen in Australia. “Wing has now made over 350,000 deliveries across three countries and looking ahead we are focused on providing a fast, affordable and safe service to our partners so they can better serve their customers. This moment continues our meaningful expansion of this service in the U.S. and advances our shared goal to better the last-mile delivery ecosystem,” he said.
DoorDash and Wing plan to expand services to other U.S. cities later in 2024.
