Despite an aura of nostalgia that comes along with being America’s oldest fast-food hamburger chain, White Castle’s approach to adopting technology has proven an eager embrace in recent years. The 104-year-old brand’s tech-focused efforts this year range from installing Flippy robotic fry station assistants in kitchens to partnering with a fleet of autonomous delivery robots in Chicago.
In early December, White Castle announced its latest step toward innovation at one of the nation’s busiest air travel hubs: a vending machine-like, fully automated kiosk capable of serving up hot sliders 24/7.
White Castle’s new touch-screen meal machine is the product of a partnership with next-gen food kiosk company Just Baked and Evolvending, the operator and manager of forward-focused dining solutions. According to a Dec. 3 press release, the unit is located directly across from a kids’ play area in Terminal A at Boston Logan International Airport.
“No tips, no fees, no lines,” White Castle lists the benefits to its airport kiosk directly on the front of the machine. The menu features classic sliders along with new offerings.
“White Castle is thrilled to bring the Crave to Boston Logan and nourishment to travelers at this iconic airport,” said Sarah Paulson, White Castle’s director of retail marketing, innovation, and licensing, in a press release. “Our retail division has been bringing Sliders to Cravers outside of restaurants for nearly 40 years. Now, thanks to our partnership with Just Baked and Evolvending, these same Sliders are ready in under two minutes for a hot and tasty meal or snack on the go.”
The White Castle press considered the kiosk the continuation of an ongoing commitment to innovation and accessibility.
Beyond the partnership with White Castle, Evolvending’s website states the company has worked with a variety of restaurant brands, including California Pizza Kitchen and The Cheesecake Factory.
