Wonder, the New York-based parent company of Grubhub, announced Jan. 20 the acquisition of Claim, a restaurant rewards app known for exclusive weekly cash-back offers that users can redeem for dine-in or pick-up orders.
The acquisition allows restaurants from Grubhub’s merchant network to benefit from Claim’s guest acquisition and retention tools, according to a Jan. 20 press release. Claim immediately became available to Grubhub merchants and diners in New York City, with a nationwide rollout scheduled later in the year.
According to Claim’s website, the app differs from more traditional reward programs because partner brands pay consumers directly to try certain products. At least once a week, including every Thursday, app users receive “drops” — discounts from brands — that they can select and redeem before a given expiration date.
“We’re committed to helping our restaurant partners build thriving businesses – both on and beyond our platform,” Howard Migdal, CEO of Grubhub, said in a release. “Claim’s innovative rewards technology introduces a powerful new way for our restaurant partners to engage in-person diners and builds on Grubhub’s robust existing suite of marketing tools. With Grubhub and Claim together under one roof, we can scale Claim’s data-driven tools to our more than 415,000 merchants and help our nearly 20 million diners save more money at the restaurants they love.”
Claim is currently live in New York City, with expansions set for the near future in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and other major urban areas across the U.S., according to the platform’s website. Over the next few months, Grubhub aims to create a seamless experience across both apps, ensuring Claim and Grubhub diners can easily connect and benefit from personalized rewards.
Using connected payment methods, Claim validates purchases and reimburses guests via Venmo within five days of eligible transactions. Users can trade benefits with friends on the app, according to Claim.co. The platform’s algorithm connects consumers with brands based on their shopping activity and sends rewards that incentivize users to try new things.
“Restaurants bring our communities together, and they deserve an effortless way to find great customers,” Sam Obletz, co-founder and CEO of Claim, said in a release. “By combining a delightful rewards experience and powerful machine learning models, we match restaurants with their next regulars. Claim is a game-changer for these businesses, and joining Grubhub marks an exciting new chapter as we scale to reach millions more diners and thousands of restaurants.”
Claim does not currently support third-party services such as Uber Eats, Amazon, Grubhub or DoorDash, according to the brand’s website. Instead, they encourage guests to support in-network businesses in person or directly through their websites.
