Sweetgreen has sold Spyce, the robotics and technology behind its Infinite Kitchen format, to Wonder, the multi-concept restaurant company founded by Marc Lore.

The $186.4 million sale transfers ownership of the automation platform that has shaped Sweetgreen’s newest store formats.

Wonder plans to open an Infinite Kitchen inside one of its Manhattan locations in 2026.

A company spokesperson told Food On Demand that the site “will form the bedrock of our efforts to integrate this technology into Wonder’s platform and explore new ways to extend automation beyond bowls, including fryers, ovens, woks, beverages, and more.”

The spokesperson added that it aims to install Infinite Kitchen technology in “half of our new kitchens starting in 2027” and that “down the line, we believe this technology can unlock the ability to operate over 100 restaurants across every cuisine type out of a small kitchen.”

Wonder pointed to the system’s impact within Sweetgreen. “Infinite Kitchen has proven ability to deliver significantly faster throughput and enhanced food quality, order accuracy, and portion consistency, all while providing more time for employees to engage with customers,” the spokesperson said, noting that “team member turnover is meaningfully lower at Infinite Kitchen locations.”

The system uses robotics to dispense ingredients from tubes as a bowl moves along a smart track. Customers order at kiosks or through the Sweetgreen app before the bowl is assembled for pickup.

Sweetgreen will continue deploying Infinite Kitchens across its own restaurants through a supply and license agreement. However, 38 Spyce engineers, along with Spyce’s co-founders, will now join Wonder.

The next phase will test how a system built for salads and bowls can be expanded across new menu categories.

Wonder’s latest moves

Wonder has over 80 locations in the U.S. and lets customers order multiple cuisines on one ticket, all prepared in the same kitchen. It partners with celebrity chefs like Bobby Flay, José Andrés, and others for the menu.

Earlier this year, it purchased Grubhub for $650 million, and in 2023 acquired meal kit service Blue Apron for $103 million.

Most recently, it began testing robotic delivery with Avride.
