Alcoholic drinks are coming front and center to the DoorDash platform. The largest U.S.-based delivery provider just unveiled a new feature called DoubleDash that allows diners to order food from one establishment and drinks from another, all in a single order with no additional delivery fees or order minimums.
It’s a notable addition for the delivery space, as many restaurant operators have struggled to replicate high-margin beverage take-rates for off-premises orders.
Drinks with DoubleDash, as the company calls it, is available after customers have selected their meal from a restaurant. They just scroll to the bottom of the menu where they can browse alcohol options available from a nearby liquor, convenience or grocery store. Customers add the drinks to the order and continue to checkout.
“We are excited to unveil the latest DoubleDash innovation with the introduction of Drinks, giving customers the opportunity to pair their perfect drink with any meal on DoorDash, conveniently bundled all in one order,” said Ben Damon, product manager at DoorDash. “As we continue on our mission to be the one-stop shop for all local commerce needs, we’re excited by the endless possibilities with DoubleDash to connect customers to new categories in a seamless way, while providing incremental growth opportunities for our local convenience, grocery, and liquor store merchants.”
Since the pilot launch of Drinks with DoubleDash, order data shows common combinations have been champagne and burgers, margaritas and pasta, sake and pizza, champagne and Thai food, and cabernet sauvignon and deli sandwiches. So far, there’s no official take rate for bloody mary cocktails with breakfast—which seems like an especially notable opportunity.
After the launch of alcohol onto DoorDash last year, the company has more than doubled the number of alcohol stores on the platform, with 130 percent store growth in the category from September 2021 through June of 2022.
